Annuities Are Complex : New York Times Boils Down Salient Points
Annuities can be extremely complex. and confusing.  The New York Times recently did a piece on them which boiled down the salient points.  Basically, annuities are built to ensure that you don’t run out of money during your retirement years, providing a steady stream of payments.  However, they can be loaded with fees, particularly if you want to redeem early.  In summary, there are four types of annuities, and the article which follows is a great place to start if you think you are interested

Retiring Early Can Be A Challenge
A new study by GOBankingRates says that the ideal retirement age for today’s workers is 58 ½.  However, that may be wishful thinking.  Most people won’t have enough money to retire comfortably at that young age, and funds can’t be withdrawn tax-free from an IRA or 401 (k) before you hit 59 ½.  It is estimated that 42% of working age adults have less than 10K in long-term savings.

There is no question that the deficit is ballooning, and many wonder how the Social Security and Medicare funds are going to fare in light of all of this debt.  The latest annual report from the Board of Trustees shows that Social Security will hit an undesirable inflection point this year.  For the first time since 1992, it will spend more than it collects in revenue by $1.7 billion.  Although this is not a large amount in the grand scheme of things, as more baby boomers retire this shortfall

Reverse Mortgage Market Opens For Jumbo Loans
A number of lenders are jumping into the reverse mortgage market for jumbo loans.  Previously, it was difficult to find a lender who would do anything more than the traditional reverse mortgage, which allows you to borrow up to $679,650.  These are called Home Equity Conversion Mortgages and are insured by the U. S. government.  Quicken Loans recently introduced something called the Home Equity Loan Optimizer, or HELO, which offers loan amounts up to $4 million.  “We live in a world where people

Elder Abuse Claimed By Former Holman Building Owner
The Former owner of the Holman Building, Nader Agha, has filed a lawsuit claiming elder abuse, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud by a realtor and businessman who, among other things, is alleged to have forged his signature on documents to open a marijuana operation in Salinas.  Agha, 75, claims in a court filing that cannabis operator and real estate agent Mike Bitar defrauded him by using his financial statements without his permission, bilking him out of profits and not repaying loans.
