Medicare Part B In A Pickle Over Rising Drug Prices
There is no question that prescription drug prices are out of control, but getting big pharmaceutical companies to taper price increased voluntarily has been challenging.  President Trump has tried a number of tactics to get drug prices reduced, most recently with Medicare developing an “international pricing index” to use it to calculate a “target price” in the U.S. comparable to what people pay overseas.  The proposal is expected to produce a 30% reduction in spending on these drugs by

Nearly 7% Of Cancer Cases In The U.S. Linked To Obesity
A new study has linked obesity to 4% of cancers worldwide.  It’s well known that obesity causes diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol.  However, many people were unaware of the link between cancer and obesity.  The study found that the situation is even worse in the U.S. than on a global basis, with 6.9% of cancer cases in the U.S. linked to obesity, according to the study which was published in the Journal CA, a cancer journal for physicians.  13 different types of cancer were linked

Big Problems Found At Assisted Living Memory Care Facilities : Unprepared For Alzheimer's Patients
The New York Times investigated the state of Assisted Living Facilities in three states (including California) with disturbing results.  In South Carolina, a woman with dementia slipped out of her assisted living facility and was found dead in a pond behind the facility with puncture wounds on her ear, temple, jaw and cheeks.  Her pacemaker was later found inside an alligator in the pond.  She had wandered away from her room and nobody noticed that she was missing for seven hours.  Assisted

Risk Of Heart Attack High On Christmas Eve
Swedish researchers have found that, sadly, the number of heart attacks spike on Christmas eve.  The study, which was published in the BMJ (formerly the British Medical Journal) looked at 283,014 cases of heart attacks over a 16-year period.  They found that the risk of heart attack is 37% higher than normal on Christmas Eve, although on Christmas Day the risk drops 29%.  Other studies have found that earthquakes, hurricanes, stock market crashes, wars and high-stakes World Cup soccer matches

Brain Genome Project Makes Great Strides
Scientists have started to map the human brain genome in hopes that they can find the genetic roots of autism, schizophrenia and many other disorders. In the 1990’s, researchers honed in on genes that might be responsible for mental distress, but they hit a dead end.  Hundreds of common genes appeared to be responsible, and it was a topic too large to tackle.  With more advanced tools that we have now, a series of 11 papers published in Science and related journals, a group of researchers has
